The Most Disturbing Immigration Fraud Case We Have Ever Seen: How Someone Nearly Got a Family Deported

3 Sep, 2026

Immigration fraud takes many forms. Most cases involve applicants misrepresenting their own circumstances to obtain a benefit they might not otherwise qualify for. But the case we are sharing today involves something far more malicious. It involves one person allegedly using immigration fraud as a weapon against another family, and it nearly destroyed their lives.

What happened in this case?

The facts, as alleged by the Department of Justice, involve a Chinese national residing in Massachusetts who allegedly had a personal dispute with another Chinese family. That family were lawful permanent residents, meaning they held green cards and had built their lives in the United States. According to the allegations, the individual decided to retaliate against this family in one of the most damaging ways imaginable.

The alleged scheme involved two separate fraudulent acts. First, the individual allegedly voted illegally while impersonating a member of the target family, creating a false record of illegal voting in the family’s name. Second, and more devastatingly, the individual allegedly submitted fraudulent paperwork to USCIS and other government agencies purporting to come from the family, in which the family ostensibly voluntarily surrendered and withdrew their green cards. The paperwork, if believed by the government, would indicate that this family had chosen to give up their permanent resident status in the United States.

What happened when the family tried to return to the United States?

The family traveled internationally, as lawful permanent residents are entitled to do. When they returned to the United States at the airport and presented their documents, they were told that their green cards were no longer valid. The reason given was that according to government records, they had voluntarily surrendered their green cards.

The family had no idea what was happening. They had not surrendered anything. They had not made any communication to the government about their green cards. They were lawful permanent residents who had been living in the United States and who expected to come home. Instead, they were taken to secondary inspection, detained, and ultimately placed into removal proceedings. The government was seeking to deport them from the country where they had built their lives based on fraudulent paperwork that someone else had submitted in their names.

What did it cost the family to fight this?

By the time the fraudulent nature of the scheme was identified and the family began the process of fighting the removal proceedings and restoring their status, the legal and personal costs were enormous. Estimates suggest the family spent tens of thousands of dollars in legal expenses navigating a situation that was entirely caused by someone else’s alleged criminal conduct. Beyond the financial cost, the psychological toll of being detained at an airport, told your immigration status has been revoked, and placed into deportation proceedings through no fault of your own is impossible to fully quantify.

This is what immigration fraud used as a weapon looks like at its most extreme. A family that had done everything right, maintained their status lawfully, and had every right to be in the United States was placed on the verge of deportation because someone allegedly decided to weaponize the immigration system against them.

What are the legal consequences for the alleged perpetrator?

The tables have turned significantly. The Department of Justice is now pursuing the individual who allegedly orchestrated this scheme. The alleged conduct includes identity theft, immigration fraud, making false statements to federal agencies, and illegal voting. Each of these carries serious criminal penalties, and the combination of federal charges involved in a scheme of this scope creates exposure to significant prison time and likely permanent consequences for the perpetrator’s own immigration status and future.

Immigration fraud is a federal crime regardless of who the fraud is directed against. Submitting false paperwork to USCIS or any other immigration agency, whether to benefit yourself or to harm someone else, is a serious federal offense. The fact that the alleged motive here was personal retaliation rather than personal gain does not diminish the severity of the conduct in the eyes of federal law.

What does this case teach about immigration system vulnerabilities?

This case reveals something that most people never think about. The immigration system, like any government record-keeping system, depends on the accuracy of the documents submitted to it. When someone submits fraudulent paperwork that appears legitimate, the system may act on that paperwork before the fraud is detected. A family can find themselves in removal proceedings not because of anything they did but because someone else submitted documents in their name.

The lesson for lawful permanent residents and other immigrants is to stay engaged with their own immigration records. Monitor your status. Check your I-94 records periodically. Be aware of any correspondence or notices coming from USCIS or other immigration agencies, and if something unexpected appears that you did not initiate, address it immediately with an immigration attorney. Identity theft in the immigration context can have consequences that go far beyond financial fraud.

What is the most important takeaway from this story?

Two things stand out. First, the immigration system can be weaponized by bad actors in ways that have devastating consequences for innocent people, and the damage done before the fraud is uncovered can be irreversible without significant legal intervention. Second, attempting to use immigration fraud as a weapon against another person is a federal crime with severe consequences. The alleged perpetrator in this case went from trying to destroy a family’s immigration status to facing federal criminal prosecution themselves.

There is no version of a scheme like this that ends well for the person who attempts it. And for the innocent families who find themselves targeted by immigration fraud, the importance of immediate and experienced legal representation when something goes wrong with your immigration status cannot be overstated.
