How to Renew Your 10-Year Green Card: The Good and the Bad

15 Oct, 2024

If your 10-year green card has expired and you’re looking to renew it, there’s a mix of good news and not-so-good news. I am John Khosravi, an immigration attorney. I help couples with marriage green cards and renewals. In this post, I provide some important insights into the process.

The Simple But Slow Renewal Process

The process to renew your green card is straightforward, but delays unfortunately bog it down. Typically, the timeline for renewing a 10-year green card (using Form I-90) can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. While the application itself is not complex, the processing times are frustratingly long due to government backlogs.

Automatic Extension for Expired Green Cards

On the bright side, there’s some relief. When you file for renewal, you’ll receive a receipt notice from the government. This notice grants an automatic 36-month (three-year) extension to your green card. Even if your current card has already expired, this extension serves as proof of your legal status, allowing you to continue working, traveling, renewing your driver’s license, and fulfilling other needs that require proof of residency.

The Downside of Delays

Unfortunately, despite the automatic extension, the prolonged wait times remain a significant frustration for many green card holders. These delays often feel unnecessary, and I encourage people to voice their concerns and push for faster processing.

In the meantime, green card holders will need to manage the extended timelines, but at least they have the security of the automatic extension to continue their daily lives.
